Quesnel, BC
Quesnel, named after Jules Maurice Quesnel, a lieutenant in Simon Fraser's historic 1808 expedition down the Fraser River, is positioned at the mouth of the Quesnel River. The city's heritage is steeped in the rich history of the Cariboo Gold Rush and Quesnel celebrates this fact. If you would like to try your hand at panning for gold, find you way to where the Fraser River meets the Quesnel River — the spot Ben MacDonald first found gold in 1859. This area has been set aside specifically for those bitten by the gold bug. Also check out the giant gold pan standing 5.5 m (18 ft.) high as a monument to the Cariboo Gold rush.
Billy Barker Days is an annual festival that commemorates the legend of Billy Barker, a prospector who began the gold rush in the 1860s. The celebration is a four-day event on the third weekend of July that provides fun and entertainment for everybody. The townsfolk always get into the spirit of the occasion and outfit themselves for the party; period costumes are the dress of the day. The amateur rodeo, children's festival, and watermelon seed-spitting contest are only a few of many events that promise to amuse both adults and children alike. In West Quesnel, Pinnacles Park amazingly displays what the elements can do to nature. Wind and water-sculpted hoodoo rock creations tower above Baker Creek The perfect spot for a picnic, Pinnacles Park offers incredible panoramic landscape that will take your breath away.
